Selling a touring caravan
You can sell a touring caravan by advertising it yourself, part-exchanging it at a dealer, selling it to a company that buys caravans, or leaving it with a dealer on sale or return. Advertising it yourself usually gets the highest price but leaves you to handle enquiries, viewings and payment, while the dealer and buying-company routes are quicker and pay a trade price.
This page is about touring caravans. A static caravan on a holiday park is sold under the park's pitch agreement, which makes it a different market: see selling a static caravan.
What each route costs
| Route | What it costs | Trade-off | Price checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Campervans & Caravans (this site) | Not open yet. | Nothing can be listed here today. | Not open yet |
| Auto Trader | Priced up to £5,000: £14.95 for 2 weeks, £19.95 for 4 weeks or £24.95 for 6 weeks. Priced over £5,000: £29.95, £39.95 or £49.95 for the same periods. | Auto Trader says it takes no cut of the sale price. You deal with buyers yourself. | 29 Sep 2026 |
| eBay Motors | £19.99 for a classified advert, or £14.99 to list as an auction or at a fixed price plus 1% of the final price (at least £25, at most £45). | The 1% applies only to the auction and fixed-price formats. eBay says it can't guarantee exact listing durations. | 29 Sep 2026 |
| Gumtree | Many adverts are free. Gumtree says a charge depends on whether you sell privately or as a business, the category and the location, and shows it when you start the advert. | You only see the price by starting an advert. | 29 Sep 2026 |
| Caravan Finder | £25, £35 or £49 for 12 months, with 1, 4 or 12 photos. The advert also appears on caravans.co.uk. | A long run for the money, but the cheapest package carries one photo. | 29 Sep 2026 |
| Caravan and Motorhome Club classifieds | No private price on the classifieds page. Club members get 25% off premium adverts. | You can't compare it with the others until you start an advert. | 29 Sep 2026 |
| Part-exchange at a dealer | No charge. The cost is the gap between the dealer's figure and what a private buyer would pay. | One visit sells the old caravan and buys the next. | No published price |
| A company that buys caravans | No charge. It pays a trade price, confirmed when it inspects the caravan. | The quickest route. National Caravan Buyer and We Buy Any Leisure Vehicle both say they collect. | No published price |
| Sale or return at a dealer | The dealer takes a commission if it sells. Rates vary by dealer and we found none published. | The dealer handles buyers. Ask who insures the caravan while it is on their forecourt. | No published price |
Prices are what each company's own page showed on 29 September 2026, for private sellers.
Paperwork: CRiS, not a log book
A touring caravan has no V5C log book. Its keeper is recorded with CRiS instead: CRiS says every caravan built in the UK since 1992 was registered when it was built and first bought. Caravans built before 1992 or outside the UK may never have been registered.
- Give the buyer the CRiS registration document.
- Tell CRiS the caravan is sold, using the online form at cris.co.uk/selling, or by filling in the CVR7 (Notification of Sale or Transfer) section of the document with the new keeper's details and posting it to CRiS.
- The buyer pays CRiS £20.95 to register as the new keeper. It is a one-off charge for as long as they keep the caravan.
- Check the VIN before you advertise. It is 17 characters, marked in the corner of the windows and stamped on the chassis, often on the A-frame. CRiS says the chassis number and the window markings should match, and a difference can mean tampering.
A CRiS check costs the buyer £17.95. CRiS says it shows whether the caravan has been reported stolen to the police, whether it has outstanding finance with a finance house registered with CRiS, whether an insurer registered with CRiS has written it off, and whether it is registered to a named keeper (CRiS won't give out the name without the keeper's permission). If there is finance on yours, the buyer may see it. The paperwork guide has the full list.
The habitation check
A habitation check covers the gas, electrics, water, heating and damp. The Approved Workshop Scheme says it is not a legal requirement, but many manufacturers and insurers ask for one every year to keep a warranty or cover valid. Put the date of the last check in the advert and have the report ready for viewings.
Getting paid
Keep the caravan until the full price is in your account and your bank confirms it has cleared. Selling without being scammed covers the tricks aimed at caravan sellers, including the middleman who says he has a buyer if you pay him first. If you are weighing a dealer's offer against a private sale, see part-exchange or sell privately.
