Selling a motorhome
You can sell a motorhome by advertising it yourself, paying a broker to sell it for you, part-exchanging it at a dealer, or selling it to a company that buys motorhomes. Advertising costs tens of pounds and leaves the work to you, a broker charges from £1,500 but only if it sells, and the trade routes cost nothing upfront and pay a trade price.
Unlike a touring caravan, a motorhome has a V5C log book, so every sale ends with a step at DVLA. That step and the licence question buyers ask about heavier motorhomes are below the table.
What each route costs
| Route | What it costs | Trade-off | Price checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Campervans & Caravans (this site) | Not open yet. | Nothing can be listed here today. | Not open yet |
| Auto Trader | Priced up to £5,000: £14.95 for 2 weeks, £19.95 for 4 weeks or £24.95 for 6 weeks. Priced over £5,000: £29.95, £39.95 or £49.95 for the same periods. | Auto Trader says it takes no cut of the sale price. You field the calls and viewings. | 29 Sep 2026 |
| eBay Motors | £19.99 for a classified advert, or £14.99 to list as an auction or at a fixed price plus 1% of the final price (at least £25, at most £45). | On a motorhome over £4,500 the 1% hits the £45 cap. | 29 Sep 2026 |
| Gumtree | Many adverts are free. Gumtree says a charge depends on whether you sell privately or as a business, the category and the location, and shows it when you start the advert. | Motorhomes sit in the vehicles section. The price appears when you start the advert. | 29 Sep 2026 |
| Caravan Finder | £25, £35 or £49 for 12 months, with 1, 4 or 12 photos. Shown on caravans.co.uk as well. | Takes motorhomes as well as caravans. | 29 Sep 2026 |
| Caravan and Motorhome Club classifieds | No private price on the classifieds page. Club members get 25% off premium adverts. | Price only visible once you start the advert. | 29 Sep 2026 |
| Motorhome Pig (broker) | Charged only if it sells: £1,500 on a list price up to £10,000, £2,000 from £10,001 to £33,333, and 6% of the list price above that. | It handles buyers for you under a 90-day exclusive agreement, with a small early-exit charge. It also makes cash offers, which carry no fee. | 29 Sep 2026 |
| Part-exchange at a dealer | No charge. The cost is the gap between the dealer's figure and a private sale price. | Sells and buys in one visit. | No published price |
| A company that buys motorhomes | No charge. It pays a trade price. We Buy Any Motorcaravan says the price may be adjusted depending on what its inspection finds. | Quick, and some pay off outstanding finance direct to the lender. | No published price |
| Sale or return at a dealer | The dealer takes a commission if it sells. Rates vary and we found none published. | Ask who insures it, and who may drive it, while it is with them. | No published price |
Prices are what each company's own page showed on 29 September 2026, for private sellers.
The V5C log book
- If the motorhome has a private number plate you want to keep, apply to take it off before you tell DVLA about the sale.
- Let buyers see the log book in person so they can check it matches the motorhome, but don't send a photo of it or give out its 11-digit document reference. DVLA says someone could use either to get a fraudulent copy.
- Selling to a private buyer: give them the green new keeper slip, tell DVLA online with the 11-digit reference and the buyer's name and address, and destroy the rest of the log book. The buyer should get a new log book within 5 to 7 working days.
- Selling to a dealer or a buying company: GOV.UK counts a buying service as the motor trade. Give them the log book, including the green slip, tell DVLA, and destroy the yellow section.
- Vehicle tax does not pass to the buyer. DVLA refunds any full months left and cancels a Direct Debit automatically.
DVLA's online service runs 7am to 9pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 8pm at weekends. If the log book is missing, the paperwork guide sets out the letter to DVLA instead.
What buyers check
- MOT history. Anyone can see a vehicle's past MOT results, the mileage at each test and when the next one is due on GOV.UK. A motorhome needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of its registration.
- Weight and licence. A driver who passed their test on or after 1 January 1997 can drive up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass on a car licence. In Great Britain since 10 June 2025, a car licence also covers a zero-emission vehicle up to 4,250kg, meaning one with no engine or an engine that emits no CO2, with no extra training. Other heavier motorhomes need category C1, which covers 3,500kg to 7,500kg. Put the figure from the weight plate in the advert so buyers can rule themselves in or out.
- Habitation check. Not a legal requirement, but many manufacturers and insurers want one every year. It covers gas, electrics, water, heating and damp.
- Service history. Buying companies ask for it too: We Buy Any Motorcaravan lists the V5C, service history and, ideally, a habitation service document.
Getting paid
Auto Trader's motorhome guide suggests a bank transfer, released only when your bank shows the money as available, with the registration as the payment reference. The scams guide covers what goes wrong. If you are thinking of a buying company, read are 'we buy any' companies worth it first.
